Abstracts

Working intuitively with line, gesture, symbols and shapes, colour and tone, is quite different yet in some ways related, to my other figurative and naturalistic art practice. Organic forms and flowing lines and a sense of movement enter into both, and by creating in a purely abstract way, I’m able to tap into a truly authentic expression of my senses and inner landscape.

The pieces usually begin with a simple shape or gesture, and then emerge from out of this. The challenge is to stay true to my intuition and ideas as the image grows, whilst also fine-tuning and creating something that meets with a more critical and rigorous approach to composition and aesthetic wholeness.

‘Line and Flow’ part 1

Working instinctively from an initial sense of colour, emotion and movement, gestural shapes emerge from the background. At the beginning I work quickly then gradually the painting process slows down as the marks become more considered and refined and smaller details emerge. The painting guides me as I respond to the marks on its surface. One idea leads to another; currents and directions, forms, expressions and contrasts within the image, all respond to each other and inform each other.
