Portraiture and the human figure have always fascinated me, in particular when imbued with qualities of warmth, compassion and empathy. The poignancy and power of a hand touching another, that moment of connection, or a person far away in thought. The mystery and essential qualities of the human condition and of life, these are all elements I search for.
The contrast between stillness and movement is also intrinsically part of how I approach all image making and never more so than in portraiture. A paused moment in someone’s life while they look out of the window is contrasted with the movement of their clothing and dynamism of the curving lines and shapes in the composition. I love these two elements of calm and movement and the flow of both that all life is made up of.
